Ash
Cookies = Win

Steve's Comments:

Today's new comic took on a life of its own. Ash came up with the idea of a comic in which I try to impress Harrison with all the cool stuff we're doing in the plane, and the best reaction I can get is mild interest -- but then she presents him with a simple treat for which he goes nuts. We contacted him to ask what kind of treat that might be, to which he replied (without any hesitation) Girl Scout Samoas. In fact, after he saw an advance copy of the comic, he told us that he'd be profoundly disappointed if we didn't actually have Samoas on the flight.

Challenge accepted! I started using the Girl Scout online cookie locator to find locations. As it happened, Ash and I were going to be in New York on the last day of cookie sales. So yesterday, when we got in, we made a beeline from Grand Central Terminal to the Bryant Park Hotel, dropped off our stuff, and then immediately took the subway to the Girl Scouts of Greater New York head office to buy cookies.

We arrived about an hour before closing. And remember, this is on the last day of cookie sales. And guess what? They were out of freaking Samoas!

So I did what any good businessman would do. I tried to bribe them. I tried to bribe anyone and everyone I could find in the Girl Scout ofice. Again for clarity, I tried to bribe the Girls Scouts of Greater New York. That's just how I roll.

So along comes a wonderful human being by the name of Katie Soper. Instead of having security kick my ass and throw me out, like any reasonable person would, she asked me how she could help me. I asked her if any other locations had Samoas, and I offered to pay a cross-town courier to deliver them to my hotel. She phoned around to check and located some in Brooklyn. The amazing staff set up a delivery with the courier that they use, and I happily paid them for a case of Samoas plus cross-town courier fees.

In the end I almost tripled the price of the Samoas. BUT WE GOT THEM. A whole freaking case, twelve boxes of Samoas.

So Harrison gets his Samoas, we get a good road trip story, and the staff of the Girl Scouts of Greater New York get my eternal gratitude, respect, and admiration. You guys are the best!

Portal Flight: Day 2

Today is day two of the great transcontinental Portal Oriented Road Trip. We left Toronto yesterday, flew over Niagara Falls, then on to White Plains. We took the train into New York and did Times Square, pizza at John's of Bleecker Street, and Comedy Cellar. I've been going to New York on business for years but this was Ash's first time so I got to show her around. It was a blast. We've been posting pictures and updates on Facebook and Twitter if you want to follow along! We'll keep posting as we go. The best story of the trip so far involves Girl Scout cookies... but that's another post.

Today we fly from New York to Atlanta to pick up Harrison Krix. It's about six and a half hours in the plane, with one refuelling stop.
