well really they are just holding their breath.
don`t gt me wrong, holding your breath for 5 ( and then some) minutes while doing extremely exhausting physical activity is pretty much, in my book, impossible.

but that`s how they explain it in the game( well allude to at the end when yuna is practicing holdng her breath)
