Oh, Canada
Happy Canada Day, everyone!
***before you mention it, I am aware that there is a spelling error on the word “fourth” I am not in town right now and don’t yet have access to the master file, but it WILL be changed soon.***
This comic didn’t really happen per se… I was actually originally discussing Canada Day vs Independence Day with Marc a few weeks back and I had to admit, I had no idea what the specifics were on how either country became official, just that it happened on the 1st and 4th of July. I am the girl who was drawing comics in my notebook when I should have been paying attention in Social Studies/ History class.
Anyway, I decided to throw Bianca in to this comic because I’ve already introduced her as an American character recently, and… well… I just adore her.
I have a feeling she’ll be my go-to-American in future comics.

(Sorry, I’m gonna be “that guy” and make a racist(?) joke or two now…) I thought the British were the polite guys? Canadians are supposed to be like lite beer in comparison to the regular brand, right? Like “U.S.-Light” or would you be “Britain-Lite”? Either way you look at it, you’re still just as tasty and have fewer calories! (I’ve never drank beer in my life, so I’m probably way wrong.)

So this is how Canada got its independence?! I’ve learned so much

Canada is known as a hybrid of Britain and USA, yes. We also are known for drinking stronger beer, so it’s kind of insulting to compare us to lite beer(our lite beer is stronger than your strong beers, dammit). And we’re also known for being exceedingly polite and apologetic. Hell, I apologize for bumping into people, animals, and walls. Sorry.

To be fair, I “insult” people from the USA a lot, but it’s all in good fun and usually in retaliation to them making fun of my “Canadian accent”… which is basically 4 words I pronounce slightly differently (albeit correctly) than Americans.
So I’m not taking offense to anyone poking fun at Canada. I get it ALL the time. It’s more fun to try and convince them that we live in igloos and have pet Moose walking around rather than correct anyone

To be fair, the USA owe their independence to the French, if it weren’t for the French the USA would still be a part of the Monarchy.

My reference for this comic was an American guy who happened to be nearby as I was writing this. my research consisted of “Hey… What’s independence day about?”
So my sincere apologies, I completely admit I did next to no research while writing this. I just thought it sounded funny

Well, Americans tend to have an idealized view of that time period. My understanding is that most American history classes skip over details such as support from France, a lack of major British forces in the colonies (largely bolstered by German Auxiliaries), and Britain just not caring that much about the American colonies (they had plenty of colonies elsewhere that alone produced more than the American colonies combined). So while yes, America did “kick British [and German] Ass to gain Independence”, that really just translated into harrying British forces, who had the harder job of both fighting the war and occupying territory, until they decided America just wasn’t worth it. Then they came back a few years later to start up trade relationships.
Oh, and the revolution was started by a bunch of rich guys and pirates for their own self-interest, not for freedom and democracy for the American people.

We British folk have a very different perspective on the 4th of July US celebration…for us it’s almost the equivalent of celebrating garbage day.

I’m confused, you start your comment with “We British” and end it with “garbage day”. Something seems wrong here.

I feel that everyone should have a “go to” person from another country. Just as long as that person isn’t you only knowledge about a country. Because if I were someone’s “go to” person about the USA, they’d think that all of us were unemployed and over-qualified for… oh, wait….

Thank the French? Where on the interweb did ya read that? As someone who grew up on the Border (Detroit/Windsor) and has family (that I visit) in 4 Canadian Provinces, I have great luv for the GWN. Best way to P.O. my family is to talk trash about Gretzky and remind them that they live in America Jr.

And then there’s Australia, where we decided in a recent referendum not to become a republic, because then we’d couldn’t add “Royal” in front of the names of our organisations.

There’s always some confusion with how the monarchy works. I just want to point out that we (Canada) are not actually under the British Monarchy. We do have the same Queen (and royal family) she’s the Queen of the United Kingdom, the Queen of Canada, the Queen of Australia, etc. A good analogy would be someone starts a business and later starts a second business. The second business is not owned by the first but they both have the same owner.
The British Monarchy only includes the United Kingdom and its overseas territories. Canada Day celebrates when we politely asked to no longer be a territory and instead be a country.
Sorry about how long winded this got over what was really just a technicality but I think it’s important.
BTW: I just started reading MegaCynics and I’m hooked
